There is a great new place to find wonderful fashions for teen girls and young women. Poor Little Rich Girl is a locally owned and operated store on 2nd Street in Old Decatur. Awesome tops, short dresses, hand bags, and oh la la! Jewelery! I will post more about them in the next few days, I just really wanted to start getting the word out there! I will also have the hours of operation, address, and contact information posted here.

Ok, when we move there are a lot of things that we think about. School systems, main roads, close to work, shopping and such. But did you know that here in Decatur there are two separate company’s that you could end up with your electric service from? It’s true.

On the edge of town, opposite of Madison/Huntsville area, you may end up with Joe Wheeler Electric. Inside of Decatur you should have Decatur Utilities. My personal recommendation is Decatur Utilities. When I first moved here I lived in Wheeler Estates Apartments and had Joe Wheeler Electric. I didn’t know any better! After meeting people around town and comparing notes I discovered that the general consensus is that Decatur Utilities is cheaper. Well everyone, from my own experience (I know live near Decatur Hospital) I can tell you that Decatur Utilities IS cheaper! So much so in fact that last year when I was looking for a new place to move to my first question was always ‘Is it Decatur Utilities or Joe Wheeler Electric?’. If they said Joe Wheeler, I said ‘never mind’.

So I just want to remind you that when you are on your hunt for a home or apartment, or anywhere you rest your head for that matter, go ahead and ask which electric service you will get. At the very least you will have a heads up!

Spring is in Decatur May 6, 2008

It is a great time of year here in Decatur Alabama. Spring is here! Why did I wait till now to post that spring is here? Because until now it has been still too chilly to do so. But now. . . ahhhh. Great weather, not too hot, not getting too cold, it has been a wonderful day weather wise.

I am sure you have already noticed that the number of people fishing by the river on highway 31 is picking up. Motorcycles are out regularly now, instead of just for the rare day here and there.

If this is your first spring in Decatur, be warned now! Spring is a short lived item here, it will be turning from spring to full on hot and humid summer before you know it. So now is the time to get out and enjoy the temperatures and the sun. Pack a picnic basket, grab a blanket, don’t forget the insect repelent, and go enjoy a great time with family or friends, because the nice days won’t last.

Enjoy, stay safe, DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE!!!!!!!!!!!! and we can all bask in this, Spring time in Decatur Alabama!

Great Drive Through Mexican Food May 2, 2008

If you are like me, from Southern California, then you have a certain standard you are used to for Mexican food quick. You know, the drive through taco places that you can get anything from a carne asada burrito, taquitos, carnitas, or carne asada chips or fries. If you are also like me, when you moved here to Decatur Alabama you started going through withdrawals!!!!!!!!!

Do I have a find for you! I found a place, right here in Decatur, that has great carne asada tacos, omfg drool worthy tamales, and while there carne asada burrito isn’t quite what I am used to, it still beats anything else here and is worth a try!

El Palomino Taqueria Mexican Food. Small. Blink and you miss it. But gooooooooood. You can buy tamales by the dozen or 1/2 dozen. Soft corn tortilla carne asada tacos are just $1.25. They have a large menu to order from, but be aware that they are not very flexible with making things that you want that are not on the menu. I have been trying for more months than I care to think of to get them to make carne asada chips, and every time I go through they won’t do it. But, I still always find something to order!

If you do want to try to have them make something specific (like carne asada chips) call them ahead of time to see if they will do it and what the price will by. I admit I have not tried that yet.

You will not be disappointed if you give them a try, and your belly and taste buds will be glad you did!

Need a Pedicure? April 12, 2008

I went to a nail place in the Publix shopping center on the Beltline a while ago, and I determined that I will never go back there. I am really picky when it comes to who I allow to give me a manicure or pedicure. You should be too! A few things that I will not tolerate is a place where they do not sanitize the items they use, like the clippers, nippers and stuff like that as well as the basins where you soak your feet before a pedicure after every client. The other thing I will not tolerate is if they hurt me. And that is why I will not go back to the place I mentioned above. Just won’t. I don’t have to wear open toed shoes.

But then my sister convinced me to try Nails First, the new place in the new Target shopping center (next to Panera). I was nervous. I was prepared to say ‘Ewwwwwww!!! and leave if they didn’t prepare to use sanitized items. I was prepared to yell ‘Ooowwwww!!!!!!! and leave if they hurt me. But that didn’t happen I am very pleased to report!

I got a pedicure only but I walked out of there with my feet feeling great! Why not a minicure too? I rarely get manicures as I am one of the lucky ones. My nails grow fast and strong and the little attention my cuticles do require I can usually do easily and quickly on my own. And no, I never get fake nails, but if my sister gets a set I will report on her experience here.

The pedicure stations are of course brand spanking new, as are all the items in the place. The seats had the back and seat messagers built in (omg that felt sooooooooo good), the arms of the chairs easily lift so you can get in and out without trying to figure out where to step, the side tables have little pull out trays so you can reach your coffee or book, and there was a light in the water basin that changes color. I know the light thing isn’t that big of a deal, but it was just an extra touch that made me smile. It was nice. They didn’t just set the place up with previously used items bought who knows where. The pictures on the wall were actually pictures. Gasp!!!! Not those ugly 80’s hand/finger/nail prints that everyone looks at in disgust.

It was a great experience, and I usually hate getting pedicures. The employees and other customers in there were nice and friendly, and the price was great as well, $25.00 for the pedicure (sorry, I don’t remember other prices).

Grocery Stores Decatur Alabama April 8, 2008

So you need to go to the grocery store, but there are none here that you recognize. How can you know the quality, selection, cleanliness, or over all feel of a store until you go in it? Well here is my top pick of where to shop. Publix. The people who work there are friendly, the store has always been clean when I have gone in, and the selection is great. There are three things though that make Publix the best grocery store in the Decatur Alabama area:

  1. If they don’t carry it, you can ask them to and they will get it for you. That easy. Yay!!! I got my favorite espresso roast ground coffee that way, and Rosarita Refried Beans.
  2. They have fresh made daily sushi. Yes, FRESH!!!!!! I go quite often and get California Rolls for me and my daughter. Rates right up there quality wise with Katsu (San Marcos, CA Restraunt Row).
  3. They will take your groceries to the car and load them in for you. You don’t tip them for this service, just fyi. I have had to insist that I can take my groceries to my car by myself a few times. hehehe

They have great sales as well, beating all the competitors prices, lets you stock up on things like juice, canned vegetables, and whatever. They pull out the stops there for over all feel and selection.

Also, they have a great produce department. Not as great as you would find at Henry’s Market, Ralph’s or Von’s but very decent, well stocked, and items are always fresh.

No matter what side of town you live in, it is worth the drive. Of course, that is just my personal opinion!

Happy grocery shopping!

New to Decatur Alabama? April 8, 2008

Hello, my name is Crystal, and I moved here to Decatur Alabama in 2005 (2 months before Katrina hit). I was born and raised in San Diego County (North County) so when I moved here it was a bit of a culture shock! My numerous tries to find decent Mexican food led me to the idea that I should start this blog to let other imports like myself know where what is, and what kind of quality it has to offer.

While I have put this off for quite a while, I have decided that it is time to get this blog started. I am running into more and more California (and other state) imports, and lets face it, everyone can use a helping hand when moving somewhere new and trying to get to know their new community.

Good luck to us all, and here’s to the best that Decatur Alabama has to offer!
